Frequently Asked Questions

We like to be prepared. Okay, I love to be prepared (Jeff is more easy going!)! So, when I saw a fellow photographer pulled together a few answers to frequently asked questions, I knew this would be perfect to share with my sweet clients and friends regarding portrait sessions with JK DeGraf Photography. Of course, this doesn't have to be the end of it, you are welcome to email me with any questions!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE?

We love authentic images that are filled with emotion. We really try to seek out genuine moments that capture emotions. Most of our photos are lightly posed, we’ll help you get into place and then we’ll encourage interactions that generate real expressions and emotions. This is after all, your story!

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? WHERE WILL OUR SESSION TAKE PLACE?

We are based out of Southern Maryland in the Upper Marlboro, Cheltenham, Brandywine area near Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery. You are welcome to come to our charming, rustic outdoor studio, Cedar Lane, for your family session or we can meet you at the location of your choice throughout the Washington DC Metro Area. Locations more than 30 miles from our outdoor studio will require a small drive fee.  We also do income lifestyle session. These sessions are where we come to your home and document your sweet family and family life.

YOUR BUSINESS IS A HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM. WILL WE HAVE TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH BOTH OF YOU BE SHOOTING OUR SESSION?

Typically, yes. Jeff and I love being together and photography has always been a passion that has brought us even closer together. And for you this means more images with a second perspective! However, some clients may be more comfortable with a female only photographer. This is totally fine - just let us know! Jeff will not be offended - I promise. Your level of comfort is critically important to having an enjoyable experience!

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

We’ve put together a special page just for our clients. This page has a few gems of information including getting ready guides and other helpful recommendations. Once you schedule with JK DeGraff you will receive a key to this site.

WHAT IF MY KIDS DON’T COOPERATE?

Yours wouldn’t be the first and surely not the last! It is no big deal - really. I promise. We have a ton of patience and we love kiddos. Its important as a parent that you know that not every moment of the session will be perfect, and that’s totally OK — in fact, it’s encouraged! We are willing to bet that you’ll cherish the image of your toddler crying fake tears just as much as the one that we took 10 seconds later of him happily running toward the camera. Our goal is to capture the personalities of the kids in front of my lens, including all of the beautiful quirks, details, and small moments that make up childhood.

DO YOU OFFER STUDIO PORTRAITS?

Yes! We have a small home studio suitable for children and head-shots. Please be sure to specifically request a studio session so that we are sure to be best prepared to capture your best you!

WHEN SHOULD OUR SESSION TAKE PLACE?

Two - three hours before sunset is an amazing time where the lighting is soft and perfect! But we can make almost any time of day work!

HOW WILL I SEE MY PHOTOS AFTER MY SESSION?

I will send you an email with your passcode approximately 3 weeks after your session to let you know that your private online gallery is ready.  Galleries are available for up to three months and you are more than welcome to share them with family and friends! We recommend downloading your images to your private devises as soon as you have access to the gallery.

WHAT KIND OF IMAGES SHOULD I EXPECT?

We tend to take a mix of loosely posed and lifestyle photos during each session. I absolutely love capturing emotion! During family portrait sessions you can expect photos of the whole family, siblings together, individual shots of each child, parents by themselves, etc. Please let us know in advance if you have something specific in mind! Each image will be lightly hand edited.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We are always happy to reschedule if the weather ends up rainy or too cold on the day of our session. If your child is sick, please let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule if necessary. Please do not try to go through with the session anyway - sick kiddos always look sick in their photos.

WHAT TYPES OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

We accept cash, personal checks, and money orders. Checks and money orders should be payable to JK DeGraff Photography.

HOW DO I SET UP MY PORTRAIT SESSION?

First, send us an email and let us know what you would like - your vision! From there we will walk you through the details to include the contract and photography questionnaire. Since our availability can be limited, please contact us as soon as you decide that we are the photographer for you!

WHAT DO YOUR CLIENTS SAY ABOUT YOU?

Thank you for asking! You can read our reviews here and here. Additionally, if you would like to personally speak with one of our clients, please let us know and with permission we will connect you with someone who has experienced our service.

WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?

We are Nikon peeps. Jeff primarily shoots with a Nikon DF Full Frame and I shoot with a Nikon D750 Full Frame and a Nikon D7100 Crop Sensor. We use a variety of glass (len’s) but my favorites are the Sigma Art Series 85mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.4 while Jeff prefers the 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/1.8

DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?

Yes! JK DeGraff Photography is a bonfire, registered business in Maryland. We make sure our clients and our business are protected and operating accordance with state and local laws.
