Child Dedication

“And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” – Luke 2:40

Last Sunday I had the honor of photographing a Child Dedication Ceremony at Healing Place Church in Waldorf, Maryland. This was my third time photographing this special event, though it was the first time I decided to do a bit of research beforehand about Child Dedications. As a Catholic, I was unfamiliar with child dedications. Baptisms? Check. Confirmation? Check. But a child dedication? My research provided an interesting google history of thoughts and opinions among pastors and religious scholars. There seems to be a healthy debate on the biblical connection to dedications; were they inspired by Hannah and Samuel? Mary and Jesus? All agreed that dedications were not a sacrament and vastly different form Baptisms and Christenings.  Though I was intrigued by this research, I decided I will leave this debate to others.

What I had the honor of being a part of was beautiful, inspiring, and showed families at their most vulnerable stage. The parents and guardians acknowledged before the church that it is not for them to determine their child's salvation, they understood the child must eventually make this decision for themselves. In love and faith the parents and guardians presented their child before God and His people asking for grace and wisdom in carrying out their responsibilities to teach this child in the ways of Jesus Christ. They prayed and asked for the prayers of others that their child might one day trust Jesus Christ as Savior for the forgiveness of sins.

These parents and guardians provided a foundation for goodness, strength, and eternal love and peace. They are asked for prayers and wisdom to guide the child and to guide them as they love the child. So wherever you may fall on the debate of Child Dedications … how could one ever be wrong to ask for the grace of God and the love of the community to surround their little one as they grow? Never. It could never be wrong.

Thank you for including me in your special day!
